BMX Helmet Buyers Guide
Whether you’re a parent shopping for a kids' helmet, a beginner picking your first BMX helmet, or a seasoned rider shredding the tracks with a racing helmet, one thing matters most: protecting your head.
This guide covers everything from helmet size guides to key features, helping you find the perfect helmet for comfort, style, and maximum safety.
WHY DO I NEED A HELMET?
BMX helmets are essential in absorbing the impact of a crash, protecting your head, and can be the difference between a minor scratch and a major injury. Additionally, riding with a BMX helmet can boost your confidence while riding, knowing you're safe even if you wipe out. Many parks and tracks require riders to wear certified helmets.
TYPES OF BMX HELMETS
Choosing the right helmet depends on how and where you ride:
Half-Shell & Open-Face Helmets
Half-shell or Open-face BMX Helmets are best for freestyle, park and street riding. These helmets cover the top, back, and side of your head, giving you great protection while being lightweight, well-ventilated and providing you with good visibility.
Full-Face Helmets
While half-face BMX helmets provide sufficient protection for park or street riding, for BMX racing, full-face helmets are essential. They provide you with full head and chin protection, giving the best protection while riding at high speeds. If you're competing in race competitions, full-face helmets are compulsory.
We understand the importance of safety while riding. That's why we only stock top brands with certified safety, such as Pro-tec, TSG, Shadow, and many more.
HELMET SIZE GUIDE
A helmet only protects if it fits correctly. Here’s a quick helmet size guide to help you get it right:
All you need is a soft tape measure (or a piece of string). With the tape measure, measure the widest part of your head, placing the measure 1" (2.5cm) above your eyebrows and route it behind your ears (Where glasses would sit)*.
*See the Image Below for an example
Using the measurement you got, compare these to the manufacturer's size charts. We provide size charts for all BMX helmet brands we stock - you can find these on product pages. If you find you're between sizes, opt for the larger of the two.
When trying helmets on, you want it to fit level on your head without wobbling. The straps should form a “V” around the ears and fit snugly under the chin. To test the BMX helmet, gently shake your head; the helmet should stay put without sliding.
WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR HELMET
Even the best helmet won't last forever and are designed to compress, crack or deform as part of process of diffusing the imparct force before it reaches your head. You should replace your helmet if:
- If your helmet has been in a heavy crash
- If your helmet shows cracks, dents, or foam damage
- If your helmet is older than 3–5 years (foam degrades over time)
- For growing kids, check fit regularly and size up as needed
