Beginners Guide: Getting Started at BMX Parks
If you're new to the world of BMX, skate parks can be intimidating. But, with a few tips from us, you can get started with confidence, and you'll be dropping-in in no time!
Gear Up Right
Before you even roll into the park, you need to make sure you’re set up with the right gear. Firstly, a helmet is a must. Open face/skate-style helmet is perfect for protecting you while riding in the park while not blocking your vision like a full face.
Knee pads, elbow pads, shin pads - while less critical than a helmet - can save you from a hard slam or a nasty shinner.
Gloves are also optional but recommended, especially when you're just starting. Gloves will protect your hands and improve grip, especially when it's hot and your hands get sweaty.
Your safety gear isn’t just about protection - it’s about confidence. When you’re geared up, you can send it on ramps and tricks with less fear.
Learn the Layout & start small
Every park is different, but most include: Bowls, Quarter Pipers, Box Jumps, Rails and Ledges. Don't be afraid to start small. If you're new to riding, it's better to start on small quarter pipes and low ledges to get used to how they work.
We suggest starting with:
-
Roll-ins – Find a mellow slope to build comfort with park terrain.
-
Manual pads/low ledges – Practice balance, hops, and small tricks.
-
Pump transitions – Use the park’s curves to generate speed without pedalling.
If you're not too sure where to start, start by watching how others use the space and how they flow from one area to another. Don't be afraid to ask for tips; other riders will be more than happy to help if you're willing to learn.
Keep Showing Up
The fastest way to get better? Keep riding.
Even just an hour or two at the park a couple times a week will help boost your confidence and improve your skills. Set realistic goals for each session and remember to always have fun - that's the only reason you should be doing it!
